Because of different import laws, taxes and fuel prices every country has favourite makes and models on demand. Preferences can be older or new cars, with Diesel or petrol engines, automatic or manual gears. Canadians buy cars older than 15 years, buyers from USA ask for 25 year old cars, buyers from Paraguay prefer older Diesel cars and trucks. In most South American countries is no import of used cars allowed.
For the actual import rules of your country please ask your customs office or your local Chamber of Commerce.

Make sure to know all about the import law and import taxes to pay in your country before you buy a car abroad.

Cars made for the European market generally do not conform with U.S. / Canadian safety, bumper and emission standards. Therefore the cars must be converted when imported to these countries. The conversion work can not be done in Europe, and there are only a few importers and workshops  in the U.S. that are specialized in and, most important, certified for the conversion of imported cars. However, the conversion work is different for every make and model.

Canada: Used   vehicles acquired in foreign countries other than the U.S. are not designed, built, tested and certified to meet the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. However, it is possible to import cars that are older than 15 years to Canada without any conversion!

Canadian buyers should know most Germans take care of their cars and clean  and service them regulary. Some are real mad and polish their car  every week. But 15 years is a long time. We have much rain in Germany, snow and ice in the Wintertime. We have salt on the roads to melt the ice and that can cause bad corrosion.
Most 15 year old cars have been 15 years on the road and will show wear and tear. A perfect old car with low mileage will have it's price. I think it's the same in Canada.

Canadians seem to love older Volkswagen T3 or T4  or now T5, Doublecab (DOKA), older Toyota Landcruiser (BJ; FJ ), VW LT, Mercedes G-Wagon (Gelandewagen), Mercedes staton wagon, BMW station E30 or E39, Westfalia campervan, Unimog, Suzuki Jimny, Mini Cooper, Fiat Panda 4x4, Smart Roadster 452, Volkswagen Syncro like Golf or T4.

Shipping to Canada:
Car carriers go from Hamburg and Bremerhaven to many North American ports. That  are special designed auto transport ships for roll on / roll off transports. It need a German export customs declaration before goods can be exported. After that your shipping agent will let you know where to drop the car at the port service.

Important: Every car has to be steamcleaned before you deliver it to  the port! That is to avoid bringing in seeds or bugs from Europe to your country. Canadion authorities could do a kind of soil inspection on  used cars.

Your car must be completely unlodaed. Trunk and inside must be empty.  Just the spare wheel and the jack. No other goods, no parts, no personal things are allowed to go with the car!

A shipping rate will not include the handling charges in Canada.  There will be port handling charges, agent fees, CFIA fee, maybe  others... Depending on the size of your car, van or truck the shipping  rate from Bremerhaven to Halifax will be approx. Euro 1.200 to Euro  1800. The Canadian port charges are approx. CAD 250 per vehicle. 

I have shipped cars to clients from BC via Tacoma (seem to be complicated), in  containers via Montreal (and train, expensive and complicated) and Halifax (later on rail). The best seem to be via Halifax.

USA:

Cars older than 25 years can be imported without conversion work. Americans seem to love older sport cars from Italy and Germany, and Unimog, Mercedes G-Wagon, BMW M power...

South America

Many people from Central- and South America are asking for used cars from Germany, but most countries there have a very strict import law which does not allow the import of used cars.
